Handle: Your username.
Mention (@): When you use another username in your tweet (ex: @getblogtips). Users are notified when @mentioned. This is a great way to notify users and create a conversation.
Direct Message or (DM): A private, 140-character message between two twitter users. You can accept DM from any user but can only DM a users you follow.
Hashtag (#): This is a way to search a specific term or phrase. For example #Texastoast. If there are any relevant discussions for Texas toast, you can discover those conversations on twitter.
Ok now that we have some basic jargon down, lets talk about how do I start using Twitter.
How Do I Create A Twitter Acount
- Go to http://twitter.com and find the sign up box, or go directly to https://twitter.com/signup.
- You will be guided through our sign up experience and prompted to enter information such as your name and email address.
- If you choose to sign up with an email address, you will need to verify your email address and receive instructions to complete.
- If you choose to sign up with a phone number, you will receive a verification message with a code. Enter the verification code in the box provided.
- Once you sign up for an account, you can select a username (usernames are unique identifiers on Twitter). We’ll tell you if the username you want is available.
Like any other online account you will want to use a password that isnt easily discovered by hackers.
Twitter will suggest a username to you based on the name you sign up with. Using your business name to sign up will result in a username for your business.
If your exact personal name or business name is not available Twitter will give a suggestion that may include a number to differentiate your account.
How Do I Start Using Twitter
Choose a good username. The first step in getting started on Twitter is creating your account.
Create your bio make sure it reflects who you are or what your business does.
Upload a photo this can be a headshot or a logo.
Send your first tweet! Let the world know your online.
Find people to follow, this can be family friends or business contacts. You can even follow some of your favorite celebrities.
Design Your Twitter Page
Although you are customizing the background that isn’t much of a canvas, you can be really creative when it comes to the look of your page.
For your Twitter background you can find templates to use, and free background images.
Using a background from within Twitter you will need to do the following:
- Sign in to your Twitter account
- Tick the drop down arrow next to your name and hit settings
- Tick design tab
- Choose a background image. Find an image you like and click save
You will also want to add design to your Twitter header. Here you can use cute colors like red, pink, or blue.
You can use funny photos. Try a vintage aesthetic, grunge looks or even a KPOP look. It’s completely up to you and what unique look you want to capture.
There are many options when it comes to designing your header. You can hire someone at Fiverr.
There are really good graphic designers with great designs at affordable rates. You can also DIY, I use Canva its great for all types of designing.
If you have no experience you can use the free templates to quickly come up with a kool header.

- You can include up to 4 photos, a GIF, or a video in your Tweet.
- Click the Tweet button to post the Tweet to your profile.

While using your account in the search icon you can find anyone who has a public profile. Search for your favorite celeb, a business contact, or just friends you want to keep up with.
Using twitter for business or personal use will be a great experience. The platform is designed for you to be able to connect with your audience and share your thoughts.
